Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to a few frequently asked questions. If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for here, feel free to reach out to us at contact@levitycounselling.com and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

What is therapy at Levity like?

Megan and Jess both work similarly, favouring talk-therapy rather than a structured therapy model. We often provide longer-term therapy as we both use relational, attachment-focused approaches.

What can I expect at my first session?

We’ll meet and get a chance to get to know each other. We will review your history, getting to know about what you’re seeking therapy for, how long you’ve been navigating those aspects of your life, and might ask questions about your family and supports, sleep habits, health, current coping strategies, and interests. Then we’ll discuss the therapy goals you’d like to set.

How long does therapy last?

That's a good question, and one that's difficult to answer. Therapy can last a short time or for a longer period depending on the concern and the pacing. In general we work with people long-term, meaning for at least 1-2 years. How frequently you see your therapist is up to you, and will be something discussed early in the process.

How are psychotherapists different from psychologists?
The main difference between psychotherapists and psychologists is that psychotherapists can't formally diagnose mental disorders or fill out medical paperwork for clients.
My therapist no longer works at Levity. How do I find them?

You’re in luck! Ellis, Angela, and Kayla have all launched solo practices operating out of the same office location as Levity Counselling (104 Centrepointe Drive), so they haven’t gone far. You can find them online at the links below:

Angela: https://www.traumatherapyottawa.ca/

What makes your approach different?

At Levity Counselling we work as humans first, therapists second. We certainly don't have it all figured out, but that's part of what makes us helpful in our work. We tend to show up as authentic, flawed humans who help you feel heard and seen while keeping in mind the power structures at play in the therapeutic relationship. We don’t want therapy to feel like we’re prescribing knowledge or information to you, but rather that we’re in it with you, a fellow human who also makes mistakes and struggles sometimes. For these reasons, we tend to play well with folks who have had negative experiences with therapy in the past.

How do I know if therapy with you is right for me?

You might not know for sure until you give it a try! Fit is the most important thing about therapy, so we don't expect to be the right therapist for everyone. We suggest you give the first few sessions as a trial period, to ensure you feel the "fit" is there between you and your therapist. If we're not the right fit, we'll make sure you find someone who is!

Where are you located?

Our office is located at 104 Centrepointe Drive in the west end of Ottawa. We are located within walking distance of Algonquin College and Baseline bus station. We see clients in person at our office location as well as and virtually using a secure, confidential video platform.

How does billing work?

Clients pay via e-transfer or credit card with their card on file. We process the payment on the day of session and issue a receipt which you can then submit to your insurance company (if applicable).

Do you have parking available?
We have plenty of free parking located behind our building. You can find our parking lot by turning from Centrepointe Drive onto Hemmingwood Way, and making your first turn into the lot.
